Sintra is a very picturesque town set in the hills about 19km from Lisbon. Its tremendous natural beauty has been the inspiration of several noted poets and writers, most notably Lord Byron, who described the town as "the most pleasing in Europe".
The town is well equipped to cater for visitors. As well as the many places of beauty and
historical interest, the quaint, cobbled streets of the town are littered with cosy cafes
and shops to tempt a variety of tastes.
There is an excellent train service direct to Lisbon, and buses to several local beaches. Due to the hilltop nature of the town, and the cobbled streets, Sintra isn't recommended for those with walking difficulties.
